A colourful display of Multicultural and Middle Eastern Dancing kept University of Southern Queensland Fraser Coast students and visitors entertained as they browsed information displays during Mental Health Week activities last week.
The event was aimed at raising awareness of mental health and associated issues and also included give-aways and a free barbecue lunch.
Information displays were presented by community organisations including Richmond Psychiatric Rehabilitation Australia, Centacare, Lifeline and Queensland Mental Health.
USQ student services counsellor Jenny Gunn said the activities were well attended with more than 90 students and visitors participating.
They also had the opportunity to learn something new, win a gift card by answering a simple quiz and try out The Desk, a toolbox that helps people deal with some of the issues that get in the way of success ? like stress, procrastination, feeling down, relationship issues or managing worries.
Nefertiti Dance group member Jill Byrnes said dancing was a good way for everyone, including university students, to help prevent or manage mild to moderate depression and anxiety.
?As well as the physical benefits in strength, posture, balance and joint movement, dance also boosts mental fitness and co-ordination because you?re learning new skills,? Ms Byrnes said.
?It is social so people feel less alone and with Middle Eastern Dancing you don?t need a partner so for single women and those whose husbands don?t like to dance, it still gives them the opportunity to participate.
?Dancing also boosts self-esteem and is a lot of fun ? you?re wearing beautiful clothes and stepping into a new persona.?
