Thursday, Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 23, 8 p.m., Broward Center for the Performing Arts
Die Zauberfl?te (The Magic Flute), Mozart?s operatic masterpiece, reveals some of opera?s most beloved characters as they play out the timeless drama of good versus evil: the vengeful Queen of the Night, her conflicted daughter Pamina, the charming bird catcher Papageno, and the handsome prince Tamino. It is the enlightened Sarastro, though, who thwarts the Queen of the Night?s attack and breaks her power forever. This fairy tale work was written to provide popular, even slapstick entertainment for a rustic theater on the outskirts of Vienna, but its harmonic structure and beautiful music have made it a key monument of Western classical music. Ever since its 1791 premiere, it continues to be one of the world?s most frequently-performed operas. $60?$200 per ticket, Club Level $129 per ticket. 201 SW Fifth Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33312, www.browardcenter.org

Looped
Tuesday, Feb. 26?Sunday, March 3, matinee and evening performances, Parker Playhouse
Matthew Lombardo wrote this engaging play about Southern, but by no means a belle, Tallulah Bankhead, who was known for wild partying and convention-defying exploits that surpassed even today?s celebrity bad girls. Based on a true story, the play is set in a 1965 sound studio. Ms. Bankhead has been summoned to re-record, or loop, a single muffed line of dialogue from what would be her last film, Die, Die My Darling. It?s a simple task, but ultimately takes hours when Bankhead arrives so inebriated she?s unable to loop the line properly. What ensues is an uproarious showdown between an uptight film editor and the outrageous legend. Held hostage to Bankhead?s antics, her recollections spill out as her talk turns to scandals and rumors that have followed her for years ? bedding Gary Cooper and Joan Crawford, her disastrous turn in A Streetcar Named Desire, and more. $28?$66 per ticket. 707 Northeast 8th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304, www.browardcenter.org.
